According to the RSA, 2016 saw a 15% rise in road deaths over the previous year. Three out of the past four years have seen increases in road deaths, a trend we’re all eager to break.
Project EDWARD is one way we can do it.
The goal is simple: No one should die on the roads of Europe on Thursday, 21st September 2017. To do that, TISPOL (the European Traffic Police Network), is asking people to pledge to be safer road users.
The pledge isn’t a vigilante rallying cry. It’s not an excuse to go off at everyone you see about Lane discipline, the “12 o’clock” rule and when to use your indicator (Always. Always use your indicator).
The pledge is a promise to yourself to take that little bit more care this Thursday. Take the time to check your tires, and that your lights and brakes are in working order. Be more mindful of yourself and other road users. Realise some of the bad habits we all slowly develop while driving, and take steps to address them.
If 2017 follows the trends of recent years, 60 more people will lose their lives on Irish roads before the end of the year.
All said and done, none of these graphs and statistics matter. When it comes to road deaths, one is one too many.
Unfortunately, there will always be factors out of our control when it comes to road safety. The one thing we can control is our own road behaviour. Take the pledge today and do your part to help Europe go one day without a road death.
