The M50 is a motorway surrounding Dublin City. It is both the outer ring road for Dublin and the main interconnector between the motorways of Ireland. It is currently used by an average of 130,000 vehicles every day. That’s 5% of all of the vehicles registered in Ireland, concentrated on one road around the capital.
The M50 toll is situated between Junctions 6 & 7 on the M50, to the west of the city. It is unique among Irish toll roads for two reasons.
Cars travel through the tolling area without having to stop or even slow down. Instead, a combination of lasers and video cameras record the registration plates of vehicles passing beneath the purple signs. Drivers can prepay for a toll up to 6 months in advance. If they decide to pay after using the M50 toll, they must pay by 8pm the following day.
The barrier free system has many benefits for those living in Dublin and for those who use the M50 on a daily basis. However, if you’re only using the road once or twice in a rental car it can seem more complicated than the traditional toll booths. At eFlow, we’ve worked hard to make paying your toll as easy as throwing some coins in to a bucket.
It’s worth stressing, you should always contact your rental company to find out if your rental agreement covers the payment of toll charges. If it doesn’t, there are 3 ways to pay:
The M50 Quick Pay App allows you to pay your toll right from your phone. It’s a 3 step process.
If you want a receipt, you can enter your email address as this stage and click “Continue”. And you’re all set!
Since you’re here, you can pay for a toll right from this website. It’s the same process as paying through the app, but it doesn’t have the snazzy card reading feature.
We recognise not everyone wants to pay using a credit card, and for those customers who prefer cash we’ve partnered with Payzone. There are over 7,000 Payzone outlets all across Ireland where you can pay your M50 toll. All you need is the same two pieces of information as the other methods; your registration number, and the number of journeys you wish to pay for.
Payzone have a really useful tool on their website to help you find your nearest outlet.
If you’re unsure if you’ve used the M50 toll, or if you have missed the 8pm next day deadline, please feel free to contact us on Twitter or Facebook and we’ll be happy to help. If you include your Full Name, Registration Number, and the Pick Up and Drop Off dates of your vehicle it’ll really help us when answering your queries.
